How Long Does Swelling Last After Labiaplasty? A Week-by-Week Recovery Guide

By Dr. Maryam Zamani

If you are considering labiaplasty, you may be wondering: How long does swelling last after labiaplasty?

Swelling is a normal part of the healing process and is typically most noticeable during the first several days after surgery. While significant improvement usually occurs during the first few weeks, it can take approximately six weeks for most swelling to resolve. A small amount of residual swelling may continue for several months as the tissues fully heal.

At her Beverly Hills practice, dual board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Maryam Zamani guides patients through each stage of labiaplasty recovery, including how to manage swelling, when to return to work and exercise, and when patients can expect to see their results.

In this blog post, we’ll explain how long swelling after labiaplasty typically lasts, what to expect week by week, and what you can do to support a smooth recovery.

How Long Does Swelling Last After Labiaplasty?

Most patients should expect noticeable swelling during the first one to two weeks after labiaplasty. The swelling generally improves considerably over the following weeks, with much of it resolving by approximately six weeks.

However, every patient heals differently.

A small amount of residual swelling can persist for several months, which is one reason patients should not judge their final labiaplasty results too early.

Your activity level can also affect swelling throughout your recovery. You may notice that swelling improves while you are resting but temporarily increases again after you begin spending more time on your feet or returning to your normal activities.

Why Is There So Much Swelling After Labiaplasty?

Swelling is part of your body’s natural response to surgery. Fluid accumulates in the tissues as part of the healing process.

The location of the labia can make postoperative swelling particularly noticeable.

As Dr. Zamani explains, swelling follows gravity. Because the labia are located at the lowest portion of the trunk when you are sitting or standing, fluid can accumulate in the area throughout the day.

This means your swelling may not look exactly the same from morning to night. You may also notice temporary increases in swelling as you become more active.

When Does Labiaplasty Swelling Peak?

Swelling is generally most pronounced during the first few days following labiaplasty and can peak around two to three days after surgery.

During this initial stage of recovery, swelling, bruising, tenderness, and mild discomfort are expected.

The appearance of the labia during these first few days is not representative of your final result. Significant swelling can temporarily make the tissues appear larger, uneven, or asymmetrical.

Labiaplasty Swelling Week by Week

Understanding the typical labiaplasty recovery timeline can make the healing process less stressful.

Days 1–3 After Labiaplasty

Swelling can be significant during the first few days and may continue to increase before it begins to subside.

This is an important time to rest and carefully follow your surgeon’s postoperative instructions.

Depending on your surgeon’s recommendations, cool compresses may be used to help manage swelling and discomfort. Never place ice directly against the surgical area, and follow the specific instructions provided by your surgeon.

Week 1 After Labiaplasty

During the first week, you should expect the labia to remain swollen.

Dr. Zamani generally recommends taking it easy during this initial stage of recovery. Limiting unnecessary activity can help reduce irritation and avoid placing excessive stress on healing incisions.

Many patients are able to return to nonstrenuous work and everyday activities within approximately one week, although recovery varies depending on the patient and the type of work they perform.

Weeks 2–3 After Labiaplasty

By approximately two to three weeks after labiaplasty, swelling should be noticeably better for many patients.

You may feel more comfortable and begin returning to additional daily activities.

However, increasing your activity level can temporarily cause swelling to return or become more noticeable.

This does not necessarily mean something is wrong. Your tissues are still healing, and spending more time sitting, standing, or walking can contribute to temporary fluctuations in swelling.

Weeks 4–6 After Labiaplasty

By four to six weeks, most of the significant swelling should have subsided.

Dr. Zamani often uses the six-week mark as an important initial assessment point because most swelling has typically improved enough to better evaluate the shape and healing of the labia.

Patients should remember that this is still not necessarily the final result. Subtle residual swelling can remain even after the majority of postoperative swelling has disappeared.

Several Months After Labiaplasty

The tissues continue to settle and mature after the initial recovery period.

Small amounts of residual swelling can take several months to completely disappear. Incisions and scars also continue to soften and mature during this period.

For this reason, patience is an important part of labiaplasty recovery. The appearance you see during the first few weeks after surgery should not be considered your final result.

Why Does My Labiaplasty Swelling Come Back After Activity?

It is common for patients to notice that swelling fluctuates as they become more active.

You may wake up feeling relatively comfortable and notice more swelling later in the day after spending several hours sitting, standing, walking, or returning to work.

As activity increases, fluid can temporarily accumulate in the healing tissues.

This is one reason it is important to gradually return to normal activities according to your surgeon’s instructions, even if you begin feeling significantly better before your tissues have completely healed.

How Can I Reduce Swelling After Labiaplasty?

You cannot eliminate postoperative swelling entirely, but following your surgeon’s instructions can help support the healing process.

Dr. Zamani generally recommends:

Patients should avoid trying new creams, medications, supplements, or home remedies on the surgical area unless they have been specifically approved by their surgeon.

When Can I Exercise After Labiaplasty?

Although you may return to many normal daily activities relatively quickly, strenuous exercise generally requires a longer recovery period.

Dr. Zamani typically advises avoiding strenuous activity for approximately four to six weeks, depending on the procedure and how the individual patient is healing.

Activities that create direct pressure or friction against the labia, such as cycling, horseback riding, or using a stationary bike, may require particular caution.

Your surgeon should clear you before you return to these activities.

Is It Normal for One Side to Be More Swollen After Labiaplasty?

Some temporary asymmetry can occur during labiaplasty recovery.

The two sides of the body do not always heal at exactly the same rate, and swelling can temporarily make one labium appear larger than the other.

This is another reason patients should avoid evaluating symmetry too early in the recovery process.

However, significant or rapidly increasing one-sided swelling should be discussed with your surgeon, particularly if it is accompanied by increasing pain, bleeding, drainage, fever, or other concerning symptoms.

Frequently Asked Questions About Swelling After Labiaplasty

How Long Until Labiaplasty Looks Normal?

Significant swelling generally improves considerably over the first few weeks, with most swelling typically gone around six weeks. However, the tissues continue to settle over the following months, so your final result may take longer to become apparent.

Is Swelling Normal Two Weeks After Labiaplasty?

Yes. Swelling at two weeks can still be part of normal labiaplasty recovery. Many patients notice considerable improvement by this point, but the tissues are still healing and some swelling is expected.

Is Swelling Normal Six Weeks After Labiaplasty?

A small amount of swelling can remain at six weeks. Most significant swelling should generally have improved by this stage, but subtle residual swelling may take several months to completely resolve.

Can Walking Make Labiaplasty Swelling Worse?

Increasing activity can temporarily make swelling more noticeable. Patients should gradually increase activity according to their surgeon’s instructions rather than immediately returning to their full preoperative routine.

When Will I See My Final Labiaplasty Results?

You should begin seeing your results take shape as swelling decreases over the first several weeks. However, residual swelling and scar maturation can continue for months. Your surgeon can evaluate your progress during follow-up appointments and let you know when your result can reasonably be considered final.
